Enough!
Latina: mission accomplished, keep moving forward
Latina - the committee for the first 100 days celebrated its victory in bringing the message of ya basta to the delegates to the democratic convention = and beginning a national ya basta campaign to prepare for the first 100 days of the new congress.
Responding to calls from elvira arellano and flor crisostomo on august 15th, latina put out a call for demonstrations in front of i.c.e. offices across the nation. The objective was to involve delegates to the democratic convention in bringing the demand for a moratorium on raids and deportations and separations of families on to the floor of the convention.
To dramatize the call, a busload of young latinas traveled to pottsville pennsylvania where they demonstrated support for the widow and children of luis ramirez. Then latina went to philadelphia to make the call for action on august 22nd.
Latinas and many organizations responded in 12 different cities on august 22nd – from san francisco to new york, from philadelphia to portland, from detroit to houston. We demand a moratorium now! Ya basta!
In chicago, a new ya basta coalition gathered with congressman luis gutierrez andover a dozen latino elected officials and delegates to the national democratic convention. One by one the delegates pledged to bring the demand for a moratorium to all the delegations at the convention.
In a moving moment, the mother of luis ramirez called in over a speakerphone to address the crowd and the press. “i just want justice for my son,” she said, surrounded in mexico city at a press conference supporting the demand for a moratorium.
Besides charging the delegates to put the demand for a moratorium on the floor of the democratic convention, the simultaneous national press conferences exposed the escalating campaign against the undocumented and the entire latino community.
I.C.E. has announced that its “fugitive operation” will assign 104 teams to seek out, arrest and deport nearly 500,000 people with existing orders of deportation who have no criminal histories! On top of the postville raids and illegal incarcerations now exposed in congressional hearings, it is clear that i.c.e. is escalating at a very fast and steady pace.
Latina will not back down! We wil continue our resistance and we will continue to build a network of 1 million latinas across the nation that is ready to force the new congress to pass immigration reform and a renegotiation of nafta in the first 100 days.
